Calculate your VAT (IVA) refund on purchases in Spain. Non-EU tourists can reclaim up to 15%. Spain has no minimum purchase requirement.
Spain is unique among major European tax-free shopping destinations because it has no minimum purchase requirement. While France requires €100.01, Germany €50.01, and Italy €70.01, Spain allows non-EU tourists to claim a VAT refund on any qualifying purchase, regardless of the amount. The standard IVA (Impuesto sobre el Valor Añadido) rate is 21%, with reduced rates of 10% for food and certain services, and a super-reduced rate of 4% for bread, milk, books, and medications. This makes Spain one of the most accessible tax-free shopping destinations in Europe.
Spain uses the DIVA (Digital Invoice for VAT) electronic system, which digitizes the entire tax-free process. When you make a qualifying purchase, the retailer creates an electronic DIVA form. At the airport, you validate the form at a DIVA self-service terminal, similar to France's PABLO system. If the terminal gives a green light, the form is validated automatically. Otherwise, you may need to visit the customs desk. The DIVA system is available at all major Spanish airports including Madrid Barajas, Barcelona El Prat, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, and others.
Barcelona's Passeig de Gràcia is home to luxury boutiques from all major fashion houses, alongside iconic architecture. Madrid offers premium shopping on Gran Vía and the Salamanca district, with El Corte Inglés department stores found in every major city. Seville, Valencia, and Málaga also have excellent shopping. Spain is particularly known for its own fashion brands like Zara, Mango, Loewe, and Balenciaga. For leather goods, visit the traditional artisan shops in Andalusia. La Roca Village near Barcelona and Las Rozas Village near Madrid are premium outlet shopping destinations where you can combine discounts with tax-free refunds.
Although Spain has no minimum purchase requirement, the processing fee structure means that smaller purchases yield a lower effective refund rate. Consolidating purchases at a single retailer improves your net refund percentage. Most refund operators offer better rates for higher transaction values. Department stores like El Corte Inglés have dedicated international visitor desks that handle tax-free paperwork efficiently. Some stores also offer immediate refunds at the point of sale, which is convenient but may come with a slightly higher processing fee. For the best rate, opt for credit card refunds processed after customs validation.
